You know I love Halloween — the costumes, the transformations, the chance to go full creative mode. But skin care? That’s my real passion. After more than one chipped nail, smudged mask, and regretted face‑paint job, here’s what I always do to make sure I wake up the morning after excited, not puffy, itchy, or flaking.
Before the Big Night
-
Patch‑test everything
Try out new makeup, adhesives, or paints on a small area (behind the ear or inner arm) at least 24‑48 hours ahead. Reactions usually show up early. -
Clean costumes & masks
Wash or at least air out everything, especially if borrowed or stored. Dust, bacteria, or leftover irritants can do a number on sensitive skin.
What to Use & What to Watch Out For
-
Choose gentle, safe products
Go for non‑toxic, hypoallergenic, fragrance‑free formulas. Avoid harsh dyes, strong alcohols, or heavy metals if possible. Mineral or professional theatrical makeup tends to be safer. -
Avoid risky areas
Glitter near the eyes is almost always trouble. Poorly fitting masks, or any adhesives/latex you haven’t tested can cause lasting irritation.
When the Night’s Over
-
Gentle removal & double cleanse
Don’t go to bed with makeup still on. Use an oil‑ or balm‑based remover first (especially for heavy or waterproof products) then follow up with a gentle cleanser.
Soothing & hydrating
After cleansing, apply something calming — aloe, ceramides, or a barrier‑repair cream. Take a break from exfoliants or harsh active ingredients for a day or two.
